The Need: Children at Risk

Why Children?

There are:

-160 MILLION street children around the world

-130 million children around the world that lack access to education

-246 million are child laborers

-8.4 million children are trapped in human trafficking,  prostitution, and slavery

-30,000 children that die every day from malnutrition and preventable diseases    (*Statistics compiled in L.O.P. no. 34 “ At Risk” People)

-Nearly 85% of people who make a decision to follow Christ do so between the ages of 4 and 14.     (George Barna in “Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions”)

YET, 85% of mission resources are spent on reaching adults    (Orphanos Foundation, Mission Maker, 2007)

 Why Mexico?

There are:

-11 million children under the age of 15 that work in order to survive.

-1.9 million children in Mexico City that are underprivileged and living on the street

-240,000 of those have been abandoned       (Action International)

Street Children: boys or girls under the age of 18, whom “the street,” including unoccupied dwellings and wastelands, has become home and/or their source of livelihood, and who are inadequately supervised and protected (UNICEF)

At Risk: people excluded by society: the vulnerable, the powerless, the voiceless.  The people that Jesus makes the center focus in his ministry and the Kingdom of God.
